SLEEP: Luxury Or Necessity...?

Would anyone challenge the statement that a good night sleep is a fundamental component of maintaining an healthy lifestyle. Many believed that sleep is insignificant thereby they give it low priority but at the end they end up regretting it.

Those who failed to get enough sleep could become more irritable and somewhat depressed. Scientist categorize sleep as a restorative measure for the brain and they believed that learning continues during sleep.


We consolidate our memories at night and learning that happened during the day get into our system at night, therefore, not having enough period of rest actually impairs learning processes and moreover, when you have enough sleep, it serves some functions to stabilize your emotions



Now, How Much Sleep Should You Get...?

Some may say 7 hours, many believed is 8 hours but to be factual, people have different sleep need, for that reason, we should strive to have quality sleep time. some people find it difficult to sleep, this is known as insomnia and its a kind of disease.


There are some known tips on how to get quality sleep.


1. Take a warm bath or shower before going to bed

2. Engage in mild exercises several times during they day but don't exercise before going to bed

3. Your bedroom should be devoid of noise but dark and cool at night

4. Establish a regular sleep rhythm by sleeping and waking up at exact same time everyday

5. Make it a point of duty to sleep whenever you have the chance to cover up for those sleep time you missed due to work or other activities


As we get older, our sleep habit will change due to hormonal changes. Some adults appear to need only 3 hours of sleep a day while others need up to 10 hours of sleep. Our biological clock is regulated by chemical substance and one these substances is melatonin - A hormone thought to trigger sleepiness. its responsible for the slowdown of the body's metabolism that occur prior to falling asleep.


As melatonin is released, body temperature and blood flow to the brain are reduced and our muscles gradually lose their tone and become flaccid.


sleep is a necessity and not a luxury, and no one can stay alive without sleeping for 21 days. some people may have their sleep pattern changed when they travel the another country with different time zone, either they are ahead or behind his normal clock.
